Meet Dr Dias, award winning occupational physician…
Dr Uthum Karunaratne Dias was born in Brisbane, attended high school at Churchie (the Anglican Church Grammar School) where he was a House captain. He studied undergraduate medicine with distinction at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He trained extensively at St Vincents Hospital, Westmead Hospital and Liverpool Hospital before entering the field of occupational medicine as a private practioner. In 2006 he completed a Masters in Occupational Medicine, receiving the University Medal for outstanding academic achievement. In 2008 he completed a Diploma in Aviation Medicine at Edith Cowan University and was cited by the Vice Chancellor of ECU as being one of the top 100 students at the university in 2008.
Dr Uthum Dias was been a NSW WorkCover accredited Injury Management Consultant (IMC) since 2006, a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) and assessor of permanent impairment since 2009, a RailCorp authorized rail health professional (AHP) since 2005, an AMROA accredited Medical Review Officer (MRO) since 2010.
Dr Uthum Dias completed his Fellowship of Occupational and Environmental Medicine with AFOEM (FAFOEM) in 2012, qualifying him as an occupational physician. In addition he received the 2012 Deane Southgate Medal for the highest aggregate mark in the specialist exams across Australia and New Zealand, only the second NSW occupational physician in 10 years to receive this prestigious award.
Dr Dias has presented occupational health research at a local and national level and has received accolades from his peers for his innovative work.
Dr Dias has worked in several locations across Sydney and NSW for hundreds of clients across dozens of different industries. These include federal and state government departments, airline, transport/logistics, casino, manufacturing, steelworks, rail, coal, labour hire, banks, retail, agriculture, waste disposal, water services and innumerable smaller companies. He has worked with several of Australia’s largest companies to improve their health and workers compensation outcomes, as well as provide independent expertise on complex medical matters affecting patients and clients.
Dr Dias has an extensive network with other relevant specialities (orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologic surgeons, sports physicians) to facilitate patient care, as well as accreditation at 8 private hospitals in Sydney to perform surgical assisting for work related injuries that require surgery.
Dr Dias also has a wide ranging network across NSW with excellent physiotherapists, chiropractors, exercise physiologists, psychologists and rehabilitation providers to facilitate and advance patient outcomes following work injuries and/or injuries and illnesses that impact on fitness for work.
Dr Dias lives with his wife and children in Sydney. He enjoys playing tennis, squash and golf, and has a keen interest in all sports, history, music, film and literature.
